"Are you black? If not- no, you are NOT Mike Brown, Trayvon, Jordan Davis or Renisha. Stop erasing antiblackness w/ ur "We are ___" BS now."
Jesus Christ are you freaking kidding me right now. Supporting a victim of police brutality is erasing the colour of his skin? Sharing grief is not erasing his ancestry. Relating to him is not erasing the racism behind this crime.
This is why I can’t deal with white people whenever there is a black tragedy. The idea that their whiteness is not somehow centralized at all times is utterly foreign to them. The idea that they cannot be a “part” of something, even something as violent and destructive as antiblack police brutality- which, in all honesty, why are you clamoring for that to be part of your life?- that is completely unimaginable to them. How can black people have anything, a movement, an experience, you name it which they themselves cannot also partake in, consume and control? Because it’s all about control at the end of the day for you and all the white people like you. You don’t actually care about black people, no, what you care about is having unrestricted access to our lives, bodies and experiences on your terms and erasing the nuance of our lived experiences of oppression under white supremacist power structures. That is a form of violence, and you are committing it with glee.
Newsflash. You will never be black. You will never feel the pain that we do right now for our fallen brother, Mike Brown. You will never know how it feels like to walk around with a target constantly on your back, on that of your mother, brother, sister, father you name it. You will never know what it feels like for your life to be seen as so meaningless that you can be gunned down in broad daylight in front of your community with your hands raised in surrender. NONE of that will ever be your experience. You will never know how this feels, but yet you somehow have the audacity to say “Well, I’M Mike Brown too! I get it!” Because you don’t and you never will.
But you know what? Go ahead and tell all of these white supremacist lies to yourself. Go ahead and talk over black people in the midst of our pain with obtuse statements demanding that you and your whiteness are centralized and included in the discussion. Because honestly that’s all most of you “white allies” have shown that you’re good for at this point anyway. Goodbye.
